Fridges are one of the most important home appliances there is. The best part is that you don’t have to be concerned about its malfunctioning in the first few years because they work well for a good 8 to 10 years. But if your fridge is more than 10 years old, then you need to be ready to get a new frigidaire. Look out for the following signs.
- Fridge doesn’t cool
This is one of the most common fridge problems. Cooling issues come up when the condenser coils are dirty. These coils emit heat from inside the fridge and get sticky and dirty as the time passes by. It also easily accumulates dust and cobwebs. If the coils are dirty then the fridge has to stress more on releasing the heat. In order to fix this, you need to clean your condenser coil annually with a vacuum or a long dusting brush. If cleaning the coil doesn’t help, you may want to check the thermostat setting. Maybe the thermostat setting is low. If the cooling is still low, consult an expert.
- Freezer has become noisy
If your freezer is emitting noisy sounds, then there is a problem with the evaporator fan motor. This is placed behind the freezer. This gets noisy when you open the door. If that is the case, then replace the motor. Another sign is when the fridge gets warmer and the ice takes a longer time to form. The noise could be because of the condenser fan where it is accumulated with dust or lint stuck between the fan blades. To fix this, you need to unplug the fridge and clean the fan blades with the help of a soft brush. If there is no dust accumulation, then you may need to replace the motor. This issue only comes about when your fridge is really old.
- Freezer doesn’t defrost
On the basis of the size, defrosting the fridge and freezer may take hours. In order to defrost, you need to unplug the fridge and keep the door opened for letting the ice melt. But this process may take 3 to 6 hours. Until then, you may need to be prepared to store the food in a cool place. When the ice accumulates, the airflow in the fridge is interrupted in a way that the fridge space cannot get cool anymore. The ice is melted to maintain the proper airflow and to keep the food fresh. If it doesn’t defrost, your control board must have failed. Get this checked by an expert.
